How can I remove Windows Messenger?

Open C:WINDOWSinfsysoc.inf and change msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 to msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7

Then use Add/Remove Windows Components to remove messenger.

If MS tells you a Messenger update is required even if you never use Messenger, tell them where they can stick their update.

And now the bad news ...

This method NO LONGER WORKS with the latest XP "security update".

I couldn't find any way to uninstall Windows Messenger. BAH!

(I don't mind MS installing "critical .NET components" just wish they wouldn't use a trojan-horse method to get them installed!)

And now for some maybe not-so-bad news...

This site

http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/search.asp?s=messenger

has more info on removing Messenger from XP.
I haven't tried the stuff there. I just turned messenger's autostart off and hopefully those annoying little popups will stop appearing.

much easier than the above...

Don't remember where i found this, but it worked for me... just go into Program Files/Messenger/ and rename the actual messenger executable to anything else. No warnings ever again... at least till a windows "security update" writes a new version with the same name (happened to me just once so far).
