'Tis a puzzlement

I have an interesting scenario that I was wondering if someone could explain to me.

When I'm just killing time, I play Spider Solitare (it comes with Windows 2000). I then turn on RealPlayer and listen to an online radio station. Both programs work fine.

The weird thing is that with both these running, I've noticed that the solitare game deals the cards quicker. Now, that may not seems like a big deal, but I've noticed that SETI seems to run faster as well. The current packet that I'm crunching looks like I've shaved 12 hours off of my normal time!

What gives? When I restart the computer, everything functions as normal. But when I run those both apps, I get better performance!

It's not a complaint at all. Any ideas why this happens??

I doubt your computer's really running faster. What's probably happening is RealPlayer is dinking with some system timers which are used by the solitaire game to determine delays for dealing cards and SETI for doing timing computations.

RealPlayer's putting your machine in a time warp by taking ticks away!

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Ticks suck blood, so is RealPlayer sucking the blood from my machine? Is it going to turn into the computing undedad? Does that mean I can't play games that have holy water?

    A bad thing.

But if your computer isn't noticeably slower, I wouldn't worry about it.
